Community-Support

Access to technology

During 2012 the equipment were borrowed 45 times, for lots of various purposes. 324 quality images, 14 valued images and 9 featured pictures have been produced by the pool. All images can be found in a category on commons.

The pool has been expanded with two laptops and with various accessories to the existing equipment, one nice thing was specially printed wind shields for microphones. We have some spares so get in touch with us if you have the use for it.

The equipment was complemented with:

  • New video camera
  • Sound recorder, that can be used for interviews or recording music
  • 2 laptops
  • Microphone windshields with Wikimedia logo
  • UV-filter
  • Hard case bags for transports
  • Backpack Lowepro Fastpack 350 for camera and lenses
  • Nikon D600 camera house and SD

The project has been largely successfull in that valuable media has been produced by the pool. However, mainly chapter members have taken advantage of it. Because of that, the focus for 2013 will be on promoting it better to the community rather than complementing it with new technology.

Access to scientific journals and monographies

Three books has been bought and a camera for easy digitizing of the out of copyright ones has been bought and distributed to volunteers.

This project has not been as successfull as expected. Looking at the German try though gives better hope, since it seems to ramp up over time.

Editahons

During the year five edit-a-thons were arranged.

Birds

The first in the series of edit-a-thons had the theme of birds, in spirit to continue make the good articles on birds on Swedish Wikipedia even better. During the event (in Swedish), with 7 participants (2 beginners), 67 articles was improved and 31 images uploaded. They were all created (in Swedish) just two weeks earlier by user Lsj (along with 8 000 others) with a bot. With some new users who got introduced to Wikipedia and a fairly good production rate it was a nice edit-a-thon.

Hallwyl museum

We had one edit-a-thon combined with a photo hunt held a few days before at the Hallwyl museum. Over 150 pictures has been uploaded to Commons.

Several staff members and a few newcomers also got to learn how to edit Wikipedia. The edit-a-thon was a direct result from the cooperation with the Council of the Swedish Central Museums and we are planning to continue working with the Hallwyl musuem and was more succefull in media produced rather than articles. It was a very nice way to deepen the cooperation and to let the staff meet Wikipedians.

Ada Lovelace

In remebrance of Ada Lovelace, we had an edit-a-thon in Stockholm with focus on women in science and technology. Around 10 new editors were guided by 6 experienced editors. 12 new articles were created and another 10 improved, a great acomplishment since there was little knowledge about Wikipedia before at the attendees. One of them blogged about it on the Wikimedia Foundation blog. It was also noted by media:

This was the best edit-a-thon over the year and what we learned is that it is a success factor to cooperate with organizations that have highly engaged supporters/members and in a field that have an emotional impact. The help from media abroad was also good and to cooperate between chapters on international interesting themes might be a good way to leverage our efforts.

World War 1

In cooperation with the Europeana Awareness project, one edit-a-thon (in Swedish) with the theme World War 1 was held.

Gothenburg

One edit-a-thon (in Swedish) in Gothenburg was held at Regional Archives.

Community driven projects

A committe of community members members was formed. It will be responsible for judging what projects that should be awarded funding. The project was announced, and the first community projects are expected to start in April. One community project started activities even before the process was finalized.

Scanning project 1

User:Edaen wrote a blog post (in Swedish) about his scanning project and the technique he uses. All works are described on Wikisource.

Scanning project 2

User:Lavallen finished the scanning of the Swedish 1536 Gustav Vasa Bible and published it on Wikisource.

Scanning project 3

User:LA2 scanned 77 000 pages and uploaded to Project Runeberg (a Swedish take on Project Gutenberg with public domain works), made possible by a scanner and computer paid for by Wikimedia Sverige. The impact on the project can clearly be seen in this diagram.

Bergslagssafari

A Historical sightseeing in Uppland was sponsored by the chapter. Almost 400 pictures got uploaded to Commons and more than 20 articles was illustrated.

Photo journey in the foot steps of Carl Linneaus

A photo journey in the foot steps of Carl Linneaus was made by av volunteer and he made a nice diary of it (in Swedish). All images can be found in this category on Commons.

Wiki takes Norrköping

Over 450 pictures uploaded in this category on Commons and a few new users that uploaded more than 150 pictures together.

The evaluation report notes that planning is very important for a "Wiki takes". Having pre-made maps can be useful so that no time are lost for the participants. Enough computers and stable internet for uploading afterwards are a must.

Swecon

As a community driven project some volunteers attended Swecon, a congress for Sci-fi litterature. User:Julle wrote a blog post (in Swedish) about the planning of the participation at the convent. We gave som workshops and took pictures of authors, which can be found on Commons. Håkan Wester from Studiefämjandet made a short interview with Chairman Jan Ainali on how Wikipedia can be used in popular education (in Swedish).

Monument hunt (Fornminnesjakten)

One volunteer arranged a local competition as a part of Wiki Loves Monuments, called Fornminnesjakten. It was ended with a price ceremony in Hedemora. The competition had 7 participants who uploaded around 30 images on Commons. Calle Eklund and Arild Vågen from Wikimedia Sverige arranged the price ceremony which got good response in the local press (in Swedish).

Book fair

Six Wikipedians participated in the Gothenburg book fair. They interviewed authors and politicians in all languages they spoke, and took pictures of more than hundred other relevant persons. In total 82 persons were interviewed. There are 113 images in the category on Commons on authors and celebrities, and 25 images on Wikimedia Sveriges participants.

Cultural treasures on the internet

The GLAM white paper was translated into English, Cultural treasures on the internet. It is a short handbook for GLAMs interested in making their material more easily available on the web.

The Swedish version got some critique from SFF (Swedish Photographers Association) about it's views on copyright. Feeling it was not accurate or fair, we published a reply (in Swedish) and offered them to join in the work on improving the paper.

Work with updating it to a second edition has started and it is probably ready by spring time.

International aquaintances (Internationella bekantskaper)

As a part of Wiki Loves Monuments, two volunteers arranged a local photo walk in central Stockholm in cooperation with International acquaintances targeting new contributors.

Quality

Identify deficient or missing content

The thesis was started in September and will be ready in February 2013.

Surveys of how Wikipedia is used and can be improved

  • Participated in a meeting with former donors, arranged by Megan Hernandez of Wikimedia Foundation, where their usage of Wikipedia was discussed.
  • Unfortunately the student who started this thesis dropped out.
  • We have for the first time managed to translate the editor study to Swedish and participated.

Content donations from institutions

The Vasa Museum

We signed a letter of intent on starting a project with the Vasa Museum, who is a member of The Council of the Swedish Central Museums and this is a direct spinn-off from that collaboration. The project is around an exhibition and we will have workshops, Wikipedia competitions, and help them with integrating Wikimedia content in the exhibition.

Wikipedians in residence at the Swedish National Heritge board

During the year The Swedish National Heritage Board employed one Wikipedian in Residence and one Wikipedian Developer in Residence. An ending seminar of the WiR at the Swedish National Heritage Board was held.

We held a workshop at The National Historical Museum (Historiska museet) with five employees. Image uploading, editing, categorizing and use of relevant templates was on the schedule.

The Hallwyl Museum (Hallwyllska museet)
Photo hunt

As part of our collaboration with the Council of the Swedish Central Museums we had a photo hunt at the Hallwyl house. Museum staff, wikipedians and a few new photographers took photos of the interiour and items from the collection. A category on Commons was created. [4]

Edit-a-thon

As a follow up to the photo hunt an edit-a-thon was hosted at the Hallwyl house to upload, categorize and work images into articles. A template for linking photos to the museum database was created and will be used as more images are uploaded.

The Working Life Museums Co-operation Council

We signed a letter of intent (in Swedish) with he Working Life Museums Co-operation Council (Arbetslivsmuseernas samarbetsråd) who has over 400 Working Life museums as members. This is similar to the letter of intent we signed in May with The Council of the Swedish Central Museums which made way to several workshops, upcomin uploads and editing from the institutions.

The National Archives

We have established contact with the National Archives and the National Archivist about future collaboration. They are inspired by the letter of intent that we signed with the Council of the Swedish Central Museums and are interested in doing something similar.

Put your money where your mouth is

  • Upp till bevis (Put your money where your mouth is). As a part of the launch of the GLAM white paper (mentioned above) institutions were invited to donate one (1) image and explain why that image was chosen. Five institutions participated and we managed to show them the workflow for uploading images the traditional way and discuss mass uploads.

Ájttemuseum

  • Ájttemuseum (Sami) in Jokkmokk will continuing the contact with Bengt Oberger together with the Sami Education Centre.

The Swedish winners were announced in a blog post (in Swedish). We also produced some nice statistics (in Swedish).

A price ceremony was held at the conference FSCONS (Free Society and Culture Nordic Summit).

200 aerial photos of Sweden

  • A wish list for wanted objects for photography was started on Wikipedia.
  • Members of the riksdag (Swedish parliament) have been contacted from both the sitting governments side and the opposition, responsible with the military issues which includes publishing of aerial photographs. We are awaiting answers.

Images from the air need permission to be published by the Swedish Defence Forces. We have investigated the process and recorded best practices for other volunteers and made a a template to show which images that have received it. A category on Commons holds all the images from the project.

Informational material

We created some new materials for our Wikipedia Education Program, and also reprinted some already existing material.

Project Wiki-skills: Teach teachers how to use wikis in class

The Wiki Skills brochure.

WikiSkills is an EU-funded project which is about helping teachers to use wikis in general and Wikipedia in particular, as a teaching tool. The target group which Wikimedia Sweden has been tasked to focus on, consists of teachers of trainees and of students in vocational training eventhough other teachers from secondary education may be welcome as well. The project is going at 25% for two years, began in January 2012 and ending December 2013. With players from five different countries in Europe, it has been necessary with three coordination meetings in Barcelona, Liege and Athens. We've been trying to reach a mutual understanding of the WikiSkills organization and the coming courses. What else has happened during the year?

  • We have published six posts on Wikimedia Sweden blog on Wiki Skills and also in other ways spread info on WikiSkills and the forthcoming courses.
  • We have conducted a small study among teachers on their wiki habits.
  • We have held an introductory course in Stockholm in order to get to understand our audience and their needs for the coming "face to face" courses. The introductory course was designed to provide more details about what it takes for our target audience consisting of mainly vocational teachers who already have basic knowledge of wikis to successfully use wikis as part of their teaching. Obstacles and success factors when using wikis in education were identified. Experiences were exchanged and ideas on pedagogical scenarios were discussed. Participants were very satisfied according to evaluation in the introductory workshop report.
  • We have coordinated the project work to provide a shared report on user needs.
  • We have participated in the work of a "state-of-the-art" report on wikis (http://bit.ly/MGWPHJ) including an analysis of existing wiki software, analysis of existing wiki farms, comparing wikis and other social web tools, results of the introductory workshops, results of the survey, success factors when using wikis in the classroom and more.
  • WikiSkills now has its own website.
  • We have initiated a tighter cooperation with 'Wikipedia in education' and Sophie because WikiSkills and 'Wikipedia in education' in many ways overlap.
  • We have published a brochure with some educational scenarios on wikis which is intended to complement Wikimedia educational material on Wikipedia.
  • We have announced and begun seeking participants for the 2013 courses: at least three courses from north to south are planned. One course will be held in Skellefteå, which otherwise is a northern city that is not spoiled with events. In connection with this, we have developed a course description and an application form.
  • There are naturally a lot of other small tasks in a project like WikiSkills. For example, Anna has hired a coworker, Leo, we have been contributing to other tasks such as for example translating material into Swedish, giving feedback to Definition of training scenarios and training curriculum, the Guidelines for Trainers and the Evaluation Framework. We have now and then provided some technical assistance and time has also been consumed by EU reporting, EU financial reporting and Wikimedia reporting.

University (teach the teachers program)

We had a blogpost about the Swedish program published on the Wikimedia Foundation blog.

EduWiki

We participated at the Eduwiki conference in the UK to get a kick start on our Wikipedia Education Program. A travel report is available in Swedish.

Lessons to learn

In this, together with the past month, we have gratefully received information, tips and best practices from Annie Lin at WMF and Cornelia Trefflich at WMDE. This has furthered our educational program in various ways but perhaps most importantly helped to minimise aspects which has already been tried with few results.

KTH Royal Institute of Technology

We have been holding workshop at KTH with engineering students who have the option to write their assignment on Wikipedia, which should be an article about a subject in their course of study. This collaboration will evolve further as the lecturer, Stefan, very much appreciate the idea.

KMH Royal College of Music

We have had two workshops with a small course of four students and two professors. The students study to become teachers in music and music production. We have set up a Wikipedia project where they will contribute with their knowledge. In the spring, Wikipedia will in a more structured and planned way, become a part of this course as the professors have so far very much enjoyed to work with Wikipedia together with their students.

SLU Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

We are currently supporting SLU in arranging a Wikipedia day the 18th of January which should be seen as the launch of the project Knowledge transfer to Wikipedia from researchers at SLU. It is a project where researchers are asked to, by the university, contribute with their knowledge to Wikipedia. SLU has filed an application as to be able to employ potentially a Wikipedian for support to the researchers.

Swedish as a second language

Wikipedia workshop, students learning Swedish and Wikipedia.

This is a continuation of the courses which are initially offered to newcomers in Sweden. At this level, students should have quite a good understanding of Swedish. We have had one workshop, another one is to come soon, with these students about the basics of Wikipedia. This teacher, Maria, would want Wikipedia contribution to become an assignment for all the students to come studying Swedish as a second language. At the moment there is a project, based on all their nationalities, with focus on culture and people. There is therefore a list, based on the students origins, with some painters, musicians, writers etc, which are not written about in Swedish. After talks with Annie Lin (WMF) though, it would seem as if a better idea is to have them translate from Swedish to their native language.

Student clubs

A student club at Katedralskolan in Skövde has started. Flipped classrom movies has been used (pending upload to Commons). The theme is "Develop city article and aspire for featured status" The project was featured in the Swedish magazine The computer in education (Datorn i utbildnngen).

2 minute video explaining the five pillars.
  • Several schools has been contacted and discussions are ongoing on where and when to start. During one of these, a teacher started a project called "Six voices on Wikipedia" where our chairman got two minutes two explain the five pillars.
  • Seminars has been held for Vittragymnasiet and Helixgymnasiet. Blog post: http://wikimediasverige.wordpress.com/2012/05/13/forelasning-for-helixgymnasiet/ (Swedish)

Europeana Awareness

At the kick-off meeting in Den Haag.
  • Lennart Guldbrandsson and Arild Vågen attended the kick-off meeting for the Europeana Awareness project in Den Haag, The Netherlands. During the meeting, they got more information about what the project entails:
    • A pan-European contest along the lines of Wiki loves monument. This contest should deal with public art and be held during the spring of 2013. Planning has started and hopefully this will be announced/discussed at Wikimania
    • Six GLAM-wiki conferences in six countries in the EU: Sweden, Germany, France, Poland, the UK and the Netherlands.
    • A report on collaborations between Europeana and the Wikimedia movement.
  • A staff position opening was announced in March, and will be filled during April. The person that is hired will work until December 2013.
  • Lennart Guldbrandsson (Project leader) and John Andersson (Event Manager) together with Jakob Hammarbäck (WMSE's secretary) all attended Europeana's plenary in Leuven, Belgium from the 12th to the 17th of June. The group's main task was to networking with all of the central persons in the European GLAM sector that participated there and learn a bit more about the work done by Europeana and Europeana's many partners.
  • The preparations for the Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA) contest was initiated during the second half of the month and invitations to participate in the planing and preparations was sent out on a number of different email lists. People from Sweden, Greece and Austria quickly shown interest in working as national coordinators or in other ways work as volunteers.
  • A few potential GLAM events that we might be able to participate in organizing was identified and discussions started with a few of the Chapters about what the cooperation might look like and be about.
  • A brochure about the WLPA and the planned GLAM activities was created to be handed out during Wikimania in Washington D.C. with the hope of attracting more international volunteers to the project.
  • Laura Tuononen started working as a volunteer with the external communications about the project, mainly through social media and helping with the design of the brochure and the projects Communication strategy. A Twitter account was created and at the end of the year it had over 200 followers (please see @wikieuropeana and use the hashtag #wikilovespublicart to get updates through Twitter).
  • Two representatives from Wikimedia Sweden participated at GLAMcamp in London on the 15-16 September. John Andersson participated there as part of the Europeana Awareness project and joined the task force that will be working with the organization of the GLAM-WIKI 2013 conference. John will work on finding content (i.e. people to give presentations and workshops) and external communication (promoting the conference to both speakers and attendees). John's travel report, Axel's travel report and blog post (all three in Swedish).
  • Wikimedia Sweden and the Nordic Museum had a first meeting about a coming edit-a-thon, that will have fashion as its theme. The edit-a-thon will take place in the 22th of March 2013 in cooperation with other actors such as Europeana Fashion and Stockholm University with fashion experts from other GLAMs also being present.
  • In November a small edit-a-thon was organized in Stockholm to try out the concept and gather some experiences. Based on the experiences gathered there an event page was created on Meta to coordinate an international series of parallel edit-a-thons with World War I as the theme. The edit-a-thons will take place in a number of countries in Europe and the world on the 29th of June 2013.
  • The preparations started for a conference called Digikult that will take place in Gothenburg on the 10-11th of April 2013. The Swedish IT-minister is likely to be one of the participants.
Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA)
  • Beppo Stuhl from Austria became the first volunteer to take on the role as a National Coordinator for the Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA) photo contest. WMAT quickly organized a strong team that started working on setting up the contest.
  • Many other volunteers investigated the possibility to participate in their respective countries.
  • Vinnova gave us funds to create a database about public artworks in Sweden. A database developer will be identified and the work will have to start as soon as possible. See our blog post in Swedish and English.
  • A new national coordinator in Sweden, Eva Fransson, as well as a person that will organize a few supporting events for the photo contest was identified and started working with the contest in December 2012. A new web designer, Andreas Lundgren, started working on getting the international website up and running. We had some initial difficulties but the first version was launched in December, on wikilovespublicart.eu. Our web designer will also help other teams to get their WLPA contest websites up and running if needed.
  • The organizing team for WLPA in Sweden had a very good meeting with The National Public Art Council Sweden (Statens konstråd) and they were very positive to the idea and are looking into how they can be involved in both the creation of the database and in the Wiki Loves Public Art contest.

  • A voting was held on the logo for Wiki Loves Public Art. The winner can be seen to the right.

Database for Public Art

  • We applied for and received funding from Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (Vinnova) in their open data program to collect and create a database for public art. We plan to build it on a similar architecture as the Wiki Loves Monuments database, so that it can be utilized in a similar way for the Wiki Loves Public Art contest. We are funded with 375 200 SEK, and we will hire for this position.

Make contacts with important educational institutions

The Swedish National Council of Adult Education (Folkbildningsrådet and Flexlär)

We have been present at two conferences, which were organised by and for the study-circle movement in Sweden. We have found several organisations who would be interested in holding circles about Wikipedia and Commons. We are now in the process of taking this further.

Dialogue with the Swedish educational broadcasting organisation (UR)

Ur is currently interested in how they can use Wikipedia, and potentially Wikiversity as a part of their educational mission. The current dialogue is focused on their material for newcomers in Sweden and how they may use Wikipedia as a means to develop their knowledge of Swedish.

Broadcasting for the national radio

We have held a broadcast for the national radio which will be sent mid December, where we held a workshop together with a teacher about Wikipedia. Not only the technical basics but also the democratic, gender and societal aspects.

SWAMID

This month we have met Leif Johansson at SUNET. They work with SWAMID, an identity federation for universities and polytechs in Sweden. SWAMID is though a part of a much greater network of identity federations for universities and polytechs around the world in the EU, the US and Asia. They have put together an idea about using that identity when editing Wikipedia, which would most hopefully engage new contributors as they may easily show their contributions on WP together with articles they have published in journals and such, all collected through a single identity. I have contacted Erik Möller as Leif asked for the possibility to meet in person in either San Fransisco or Washington.

The Academy for Principals (Rektorsakademin utveckling)

We have met RAU and they have offered us to participate at their conference for teachers next year where we may have two seminars, one each day. We are also discussing the possibility of taking part in a course they're offering principals during spring where we may be responsible for one or two of the seminars in that course.

Nordic cooperation

  • We started the planning of the Second Nordic Chapter meeting in Oslo on April 22nd, one day before the Wikipedia Academy. Topics will be the strategy work of the chapters, common projects and common sources of financing.
  • WMNO, WMDK and WMFI have been contacted to decide on cooperating on the yearbook and a common Wikimedia track during the FSCONS conference in Gothenburg.
  • We did an investigation on how WMSE could potentially participate in the Sami project of WMNO.

The yearbook.

Meeting of the Nordic Chapters

The third meeting between the Nordic Chapters was held in connection with the FSCONS conference in Göteborg, November 10.

It was confirmed that the second phase of the project for the support of the Sami Wikipedia should be led by Wikimedia Norway and be a cross-the-border project.

Booklet on the activities by the Nordic chapters

The yearbook project was sucessfully finished with the printing of the booklet Working with the Wikimedia Chapters in Denmark, Norway and Sweden (in English). A second edition might be produced early 2014. A few copies will be distributed to all chapters.

We approved a new policy for working hours of employees, policy for communication and guidelines for Conflicts of interest, policy for representation. All policies are available in Swedish on our wiki.

Review by accountants

In order to develop the organization we consulted KPMG to do a review of the chapters financial routines. The preliminary report that was delivered in October was very positive.
