In this story, we focus on how follow-up and statistics can be part of the continuous work with partners even if it is not directly connected to ongoing projects. It is possible to show the use and trends of the work we have done on the Wikimedia platforms, which makes it easier to maintain good relationships and propose new projects in the future.

The photo by Solveig Lund from the collections of the Nordic Museum has gained a lot of popularity on Wikipedia.

The Wikimedia platforms offer a couple tools to gather statistics. These can be useful when we write reports or when our partners need results to put in their annual reports. For Wikipedia articles, the pageview page is a good way to see how much traffic they have attracted over the year. The statistics are available in many languages.

We also used GLAMorgan, which shows the number of views for all files in a category, and put together eight reports based on that data for eight selected partners. We sent an end-of-the-year-greeting and thanked them for the contributions and previous collaborative projects. There is also a general page for global statistics which shows that our impact in general is substantial. These statistics can show that sharing material globally is attractive, and that it can help an organization become a household name in the entire GLAM sector.

In a blog post, we showed an example of how much interest just one single image can get. A bot from the Nordic Museum uploaded a photograph of Norwegian photographer Solveig Lund to Wikimedia Commons on March 12, 2011. On January 17, 2016, a user added the image to the English article Norway under the heading Independence. That heading was later changed, but the image remains and averages 9,243 views per day – that's almost 3,400,000 views per year!

When you work with and process statistics, a big part of the task is explaining what it shows and how it has been calculated. The Wikimedia platforms get a lot of traffic, and that's why statistics is such a powerful tool. We will continue to investigate how the statistics can be used both during our project but also afterwards, when texts, files and other materials are being used.
