Community support
  • Getting more underrepresented groups onto the projects
  • Increasing editor satisfaction

  • Womens movement history workshop
  • Workshop with some of the students from Stockholm University as a preparation for the Fashion edit-a-thon
  • Europeana Fashion edit-a-thon at the Nordic museum in cooperation with MoMu - Fashion Museum Province of Antwerp.

  • 11 participants at the Womens movement history workshop (9 women and 7 new users).
  • 47 participants at the Fashion edit-a-thon (~64% women).

  • Edit-a-thons around specific topics are great for getting a good spirit.
  • The more Wikipedians you can get to participate as experts, the better.
Free knowledge in education
  • Wikipedia is used as a teaching tool in education
  • Pupils, students and teachers contribute free knowledge
  • Teachers present the projects to be used as a resource for the pupils and students

  • Lecture in Malmö
  • Workshop on Kvarnbyskolan in Mölndal
  • The SLU-project with a Wikipedian in Academy had workshops in three sites: Uppsala, Skara and Alnarp
  • Participated at GR Educator Café
  • Ongoing discussions with Umeå University
  • Workshop at Stockholm University
  • Meeting with educators in Kalmar
  • Participated on Bibmeet (meeting for librarians)
  • Wiki skills two day workshop in Helsingborg
  • Seminar at the Center for School development in Gothenburg (25 participants)

  • Initiating contact with Everton, education staff in Brazil to learn from each other.
  • Invited to participate in "School spring" in Varberg. A big movement in Sweden at the moment among teachers, loosely inspired by the Arabic spring. We have been specifically asked on how it can be documented and shared to others.
  • Shooting the Wikipedia in education movie about how to 'view' Wikipedia together with pupils to better judge each article's trustworthiness.

  • To initiate contact with SLU and ending up having them employing the world's fist Wikipedian in Academy worked amazingly well!
  • The online course for teachers is generating more interest and 16 teachers have signed up so far. It does need to be talked more about in our social channels and overall in educational contexts.
  • The short presentation at Bibmeet (meeting for librarians) led to a invitation to host education for librarians in August hosted by the same people who held this BibMeet. Good outcome for a few hours spent on this seminar.
  • Stockholm University workshop led to two more invitations by the same institution for teachers who are educating themselves to further their competences.
Content liberation
  • Increase GLAM's general interest to freely license their material and make it available for the projects.
  • Enhance the quality of the donated material.

  • Three Commons videos produced. Example.
  • Meetings with: The Nobel museum, Moderna museet, The Military Archives
  • Two presentations at the Working life museum fair
  • Contacting municipalties about their data about public art
  • Two museums, the Nordiska museet and the MoMu Fashion Museum in Antwerp, donated pictures to Wikimedia Commons that we could use at the fashion edit-a-thon. WMSE assisted them both with the technical practicalities.

  • The Swedish National Board of Heritage presented their report about having Wikipedians in residence with pro-tips to other institutions if they want to have such too.
  • 25 interested museum volunteers participated at the presentations at the Working life museum fair.
  • 8 municipalities and the National Public Art Council Sweden released their data, or parts thereof, for use in our datbase on public art.
  • 362 images from the Nordic museum and 8 images from MoMu.

  • When communicating with municipalities there is a need to be very precise.
Reader participation
  • Identify weaknesses in the quality of content and disseminate our findings.
  • Identify weaknesses in the user interface and work to get them solved.
  • Create a positive image of the projects.

  • We noticed that some news papers links directly to Wikipedia from editorial text and were published on a news site.
  • Swedish Radio, P4 Kalmar, made an interview with our Education manager.
  • Added the Sandbox gadget to Swedish Wikipedia.

  • The links to Wikipedia greatly increases the page views for these articles.
  • The Sandbox link makes it a lot easier to get newcomers to actually start editing.

  • Even though page views increased, it did not lead to any edits.
Free knowledge awareness
  • Make policy makers and institutions aware of the advantages of free knowledge.

  • Continued research by our intern on motions that are inline with our mission.
  • Got an invitation to meet Skolverket, the ministry of education in Sweden to speak about Wikipedia in education and free knowledge in general.

  • A list on policy makers that we should start contacting is done.

Lessons from this month

  • What were your major accomplishments in the past month, and how did you help to achieve movement goals?

Response: Starting on getting data from the municipalities on public art. It will lead to more accurate articles and serve as starting point for Wiki Loves Public Art which hopefully will see a similar effect as Wiki Loves Monuments had. To have supported the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences to employ the worlds ever first Wikipedian in Acadamy!

  • What were your major setbacks in the past month (e.g., programs that were not successful)?

Response: The program Reader participation is suffering now due to heavy work load in the other projects.

  • What factors (organizational, environmental) enabled your success?

Response: Our very energetic staff is our greatest resource. We also moved to a new office this month which will make daily life more pleasant.

  • What unanticipated challenges did you encounter and how did this affect what you were able to accomplish?

Response: We used to be in a co-located office space where a lot of services were included. The energy needed to be spent to get that infrastructure up and running was more than anticipated.

  • What changes might you make in executing your initiatives into the next month?

Response: Our CEO started in late March so from April on some routines and procedures will be changed.

Additional information

  • Provide any other relevant information that may be helpful or relevant for the FDC (e.g., links to any media coverage, more detailed reports, more detailed financial information).

    Response:

  • We moved to a new office, Spotify kindly donated furniture.
  • Annual meeting, minutes.
  • Our new CEO started late in March, we are now five-full time employees and two part-time.
  • 10 blog posts at Wikimedia Sverige's blog, the one about the Fashion edit-a-thon also in English. One blog post about the Fashion edit-a-thon by WMSE staff was also published on Openglam.org's blog.
  • Swedish regional school libraries association added the Wikipedia course on Wikiversity to their list of available on-line courses.
  • We have developed a tool for making it easier for us to keep track on workshop participants edits. We will start testing it to see if it is a good way to evaluate workshops and edit-a-thons.
