This is the Chapters report for Wikimedia Sverige January 2013.

Overview of this quarter

  • HIGHLIGHTS: Establishing cooperation with the Swedish University of Agriculture including the first ever employed Wikipedian in academy.
  • WIKI-FOCUS: Mostly Wikipedia through workshops and seminars but also Commons in preparation for museum uploads.
  • GROWTH: During January we have had 21 meetings with external parties, reaching more than 50 professionals. This is through workshops in GLAM and education mainly and most of them will lead to for further collaboration.

Free knowledge in education

  • The goal for the SLU is that 100 PhD students should make substantial contributions on Wikipedia
  • Wikipedia education program is initiating dialouge with established organisations delivering educational resources in Sweden. Creating easy-to-find material and 'how-to' for teachers, students & pupils to use.
  • Starting to translate the Wikipedia Campusambassador training to Swedish.
  • Keeping a good dialouge with WMF education staff, Annie Lin, about their development and ours and what we may learn from each other.
 
  • There are a lot of opportunities and interested teachers and professors.
  • Well planned education program, focusing on getting fewer highly involved teachers rather than several less interested. Builds a good platform for turning them into spokespersons for both the education program and the Wikimedia projects.
  • A long-term view building good relationships to teachers, professors, principals and other educational organisation as they may disseminiate knowledge of Wikipedia in education to many more than Wikimedia Sverige could reach out to alone.
Content liberation  
  • Increase GLAM's general interest to freely license their material and make it available for the projects.
  • Enhance the quality of the donated material.
 
  • GLAM-technician hired in a project to enable Wiki Loves Public Art.
  • Workshop with staff of The Swedish National Maritime Museums (Statens maritima museer).
  • Meeting with The Vasa museum (Vasamuseet) about an exhibition later in the spring.
  • Helping The Royal armoury (Livrustkammaren) in their work on enhancing their metadata in a preparation for uploads.
  • Workshop with The National musuem of technology (Tekniska museet) on image uploading.
  • The Nordic museum (Nordiska museet) has been working on scanning and preparing metadata for 700-800 pictures that will be uploaded for an edit-a-thon in March.
  • Meeting with The National Public Art Council Sweden (Statens konstråd) about releasing their art collection database and potentially pictures in the future
 
  • Three museums expressed interest in donating high quality media and two of them are actively enhancing their metadata in preparation for an upload on Commons.
 
  • Cooperation with the museums and archives work very well because we have long term relationship through the letter of intent with the Central Museums Cooperation Council signed last year.
Reader participation  
  • Identify weaknesses in the quality of content and disseminate our findings.
  • Identify weaknesses in the user interface and work to get them solved.
  • Create a positive image of the projects.
 
  • Discussions with The Swedish National Heritage board (Riksantikvarieämbetet) on working with us in preparation for the European Capitol of Culture 2014 in a QR-pedia project in Umeå.

Free knowledge awareness  

Make policy makers and institutions aware of the advantages of free knowledge.

 
  • We got an intern who will focus his work on political issues. His first task was to start translate the brochure from WMDE on why to not use NC in Creative Commons licenses.
  • Attended Digisam Linked Open Data seminar
 
  • Translation almost done.
 
  • Great task for an intern, to start learning by translating. We should also take advantage of other chapters efforts more often.
  • We have not secured funding separate from FDC to let employees work on lobbying yet and are relying on volunteers. Hopefully with the intern, progress could be made later on.

Lessons from this month

  • What were your major accomplishments in the past month, and how did you help to achieve movement goals?

    Response: The many preparations on content upload from museums, which will enhance the quality on the projects. The number of teachers standing in line to learn about the projects, and the ones that we are already working with will foster a new generation of Wikimedians.

  • What were your major setbacks in the past month (e.g., programs that were not successful)?

    Response: The community is not very positive about the Article Feedback Tool. We will probably have to test other concepts on reader feedback.

  • What factors (organizational, environmental) enabled your success?

    Response: Generally, there is a big curiosity amongst other organisations on how they could live in the Wikimedia universe. This means it is quite easy to get in contact with people and get their attention.

  • What unanticipated challenges did you encounter and how did this affect what you were able to accomplish?

    Response: This year we are doing our financial report in a much higher standard than required in order to be transparent and have good orders. It was a lot harder than we thought and our treasurer and financial administrator have been working hard on this. Luckily it has not affected our programs very much at all.

  • The National Museum of Technology put a portrait of chairman Jan Ainali on the wall in their Walk of Nerds for his passion for Wikipedia. [1], [2]
  • In a managements course, Wikimedia Sverige got to serve as a case study. Six managers came to the office for one day and learned about the chapter and our growth and had to come up with ideas and strategies for future work. One major finding is that is imperative to find long-term funding to gain stability for the chapter. Other findings were ways to improve internal communications.

    Since the grant from Vinnova was quite specified we recruited a GLAM-technician which was not specifically in the plan in the grant proposal. However since that project is a key driver for Wiki Loves Public Art (by setting up a similiar infrastrucuture to Wiki Loves Monuments benefitial to all chapters and language projects), the shift in focus is still very well aligned with the WMF mission.
